Through the last decade the telematic services of information that use the World Wide Web (WWW) as communication channel have turned into fundamental tools for the institutional information. Technologies to compile informative resources for the construction of electronic directories are strongly requested. The aim of this article is to introduce in the process of construction of the subjects gateways, a methodology based on bibliometric principles that facilitates the tasks of compilation of resources distributed on the Internet.

This article shows the result of an original bibliometric study on the area of Graphic Expression in Engineering, which is present in Spanish Universities with engineering studies. It has two objectives: firstly, to guide lecturers who have yet to publish articles in ISI databases, indicating the principal categories of journals where other lecturers in the same area have published articles, as well as the categories of cited journals, that is, the source of information. Secondly, it aims to show to the University Authorities the limited situation of the area in Spain, in order that these Authorities give more support to the area.

Indicadores científicos de Galicia: ISI, Web of Science, 1990-2003

To contribute to the analysis of the situation, evolution and effects of the R+D activity in the autonomous community of Galicia (northern Spain) for the different areas of knowledge is one of the objectives branching from the Consortium of University Libraries of Galicia. To this end, among other necessary actions, we must retrieve data available on scientific output by Galician research personnel, and from there, through the elaboration of indicators, to establish the conditions existing among efforts, disciplines, organisations, territory, etc. For this reason, the Consortium of University Libraries of Galicia took the initiative of promoting an analysis of the state of the art of research in Galicia through the study of scientific indicators, in order to determine the present situation as well as its evolution since the year 1990. The main objective is to measure the situation of Galicia insofar as the generation of new knowledge and its relationship with investment efforts by analysing socioeconomic indicators that describe the situation of the resources invested in R+D; indicators of output that describe quantitative aspects of research activity; indicators of impact, showing the visibility of work within the scientific community; and indicators of collaboration with other Spanish autonomous communities and in the international realm

Clinical and Non-Clinical Variables Associated With Preventive and Curative Dental Service Utilisation: A Cross-Sectional Study Among Adolescents and Young Adults in Central Mexico

Objective The present study aimed to identify preventive and curative dental health service utilisation (DHSU) in the context of associated clinical and non-clinical factors among adolescents and young adults in Mexico. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Applicants to a public university in Mexico. Participants Participants were 638 adolescents and young adults aged 16–25 randomly selected from university applicants. Interventions Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire filled out by the students. For assessment of dental caries experience, we used the index of decayed, missing and filled teeth. Primary outcome The dependent variable was DHSU in the previous 12 months, coded as 0=non-use, 1=use of curative services and 2=use of preventive services. Results The mean age was 18.76±1.76 years, and 49.2% were women. The prevalence of DHSU was 40.9% (95% CI 37.1 to 44.8) for curative services and 22.9% (95% CI 19.7 to 26.3) for preventive services. The variables associated with curative services were age, sex, mother’s education, dental pain in the previous 12 months, caries experience, use of self-care devices and oral health knowledge. For preventive services, the variables associated were mother’s education, dental pain in the previous 12 months, caries experience, use of self-care devices and self-perception of oral health. Conclusions While differences emerged by type of service, a number of variables (sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics as well as dental factors) remained in the final model. Greater oral health needs and socioeconomic inequalities remained as predictors of both types of DHSU. Given the differences revealed by our study, oral health policies should refer those seeking dental care for oral diseases to preventive services, and promote the use of such services among the poorer and less educated population groups

PTEN Activity Defines an Axis for Plasticity at Cortico-Amygdala Synapses and Influences Social Behavior

Phosphatase and tensin homolog on chromosome 10 (PTEN) is a tumor suppressor and autism-associated gene that exerts an important influence over neuronal structure and function during development. In addition, it participates in synaptic plasticity processes in adulthood. As an attempt to assess synaptic and developmental mechanisms by which PTEN can modulate cognitive function, we studied the consequences of 2 different genetic manipulations in mice: presence of additional genomic copies of the Pten gene (Ptentg) and knock-in of a truncated Pten gene lacking its PDZ motif (Pten-ΔPDZ), which is required for interaction with synaptic proteins. Ptentg mice exhibit substantial microcephaly, structural hypoconnectivity, enhanced synaptic depression at cortico-amygdala synapses, reduced anxiety, and intensified social interactions. In contrast, Pten-ΔPDZ mice have a much more restricted phenotype, with normal synaptic connectivity, but impaired synaptic depression at cortico-amygdala synapses and virtually abolished social interactions. These results suggest that synaptic actions of PTEN in the amygdala contribute to specific behavioral traits, such as sociability. Also, PTEN appears to function as a bidirectional rheostat in the amygdala: reduction in PTEN activity at synapses is associated with less sociability, whereas enhanced PTEN activity accompanies hypersocial behavior.Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (SAF2016-78071-R and SAF2015-62540-ERC to S.K.; PCIN-2016-095 and SAF2017-86983-R to J.A.E.; BFU201563769-R to R.L.; SAF2014-58598-JIN and RYC-2016-20414 to M.N.); Basque Ministry of Health (RIS3 and ELKARTEK to S.K.); University of the BasqueCountry (EHUrOPE14/03 to S.K.); Junta de Comunidades de Castilla–La Mancha (PPII2014-005-P to R.L.); Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (BES-2011-043464 to C.S.-P.)
